Who wants Yasmani Grandal?
A lot of armchair GM’s want Cincinnati Reds to trade away Yasmani Grandal to their teams. Of course they say Yonder Alonso first but then they slip in Yasmani’s name as if to try to pull a fast one on us. I thought we could take a look at this young catcher and see why so many of them really want him so badly.
Yasmani Grandal was drafted by Cincinnati in the 1st round (12th) of the 2010 June Amateur Draft. At 21 years old he played his first season with GCL Reds in the Arizona League. He finished with 8 games played, 28 AB, .286 BA, .394 OBP, and .321 SLG.
In 2011 he played for three teams, A+ Bakersfield Blaze, (California League) AA Carolina Mudcats, (Southern League) and AAA Louisville Bats. (International League) He finished with a total of 105 games, .305 BA, .401 OBP, .500 SLG and .901 OPS with 14 HR, 68 RBIs and 69 runs. With only 4 games played in AAA we can expect him to return next season and I really think he will get a call up to the Reds very soon if he keeps progressing the way he did in 2011. A full season at AAA should give us all a good look at why all of those armchair GM’s drool over his name and it might have them adding a little more than just a #3 starter to trade for him next season. I really hope this kids name does not even come off the lips of the Reds Front Office this offseason unless they are talking about what to buy him for Christmas.
