Is Walt Jocketty done?
After signing Ryan Ludwick and avoiding arbitration with Homer Bailey, Paul Janish and Bill Bray the question that comes to many Cincinnati Reds minds now is; are the Reds done making moves this offseason? I would love to see them get another solid hitting infielder but after reading what Homer Bailey got for one year I am not sure if they have any more money to do it. Even if they don’t make any more moves this offseason, fans have to walk away very happy with what the Reds got. They needed a top of the rotation starter and they got it with Mat Latos. They needed bullpen help and got it with Sean Marshall. They then set their sights on a closer and got a great bargain with signing Ryan Madson. Walt Jocketty then went after a right-handed LF bat and got it with Ryan Ludwick.
No matter what some fans might think about their chances this season you can not deny the team is better now then they were last offseason and their chances to take first in National League Central should be a lot better.

2011 Reds pitching SIERA
Today, I wanted to discuss Cincinnati Reds SIERA (Skill-Interactive ERA) numbers for 2011, using the pitchers on the roster now. “The league-average for starting pitchers is a 3.81 SIERA; the league-average for relievers is a 3.40 SIERA.” Zack Greinke had a 2.66 SIERA followed by Cliff Lee 2.72 SIERA and Roy Halladay 2.79 SIERA. Jonathan Papelbon had a 1.58 SIERA in 2011. I got all of the SIERA stats from my updated Reds pitchers list on fangraphs.com.
Cincinnati Reds pitchers SIERA 2011
Name SIERA Cueto 3.93 Latos 3.48 Arroyo 4.57 Bailey 3.78 Leake 3.76 Chapman 3.65 Madson 2.63 Marshall 2.20 Masset 3.58 Ondrusek 4.27 Bray 3.45 LeCure 3.01 Arredondo 4.12 Fisher 4.32 Judy 4.62 Brackman 8.69
Of course when trying to determine how good a pitcher really is, it is best to use many different stats in order to better judge each pitcher. SIERA is just one way to judge a pitcher and how well he has done. For more information about SIERA please go and read all the great posts on fangraphs.com
It is always nice to have options
Out Of Options: “The following players on the Reds’ 40-man roster do not have options: RHP Jose Arredondo, RHP Bronson Arroyo, RHP Homer Bailey, LHP Bill Bray, IF Miguel Cairo, RHP Carlos Fisher, IF Juan Francisco, RHP Nick Masset and 2B Brandon Phillips.” [Source]
That makes 9 players out of 38 on the 40-man roster. Jose Arredondo, Homer Bailey, Carlos Fisher and Juan Francisco are the ones that concern me the most. Will they be able to step up their game and play to their potential the whole season? And stay healthy at the same time. I am looking forward to watching Juan Francisco play in 2012 and I really hope these three pitchers can stay off the DL and play great for the Reds.
Another question that comes to mind right now is; will these three pitchers be included in another trade before spring training? The Reds are still looking for an outfielder and a SS/INF and most people think they will look at free agents for that help. I still think Walt Jocketty will make another trade and these three pitchers might be a part of it. There have been some rumors about Homer Bailey being traded already but only by fans, I am not sure if reporters have asked Walt Jocketty if he would trade away these three pitchers this offseason.
2r2d Podcast: Episode 1 (01.03.12)
I wanted to try out a podcast to start off 2012. I am not sure if I will do a lot of podcasts but if feedback is good it might become a welcome addition to the blog. This first episode is about what I have posted on 2r2d blog. Mat Latos, Sean Marshall and Josh Judy are talked about in this episode.
