I had fun last night chatting with a friend of mine who does not follow the Cincinnati Reds. She kept asking me what the big deal was this offseason. Of course to many that do not follow Reds news like I do, they don’t know about all of the moves that the Reds and General Manager Walt Jocketty have made this offseason. To Reds fans though, (especially those going to see the 2012 Reds Caravan right now) know exactly what transactions have been made and are very excited about the team and although not all of us see the Reds winning National League Central, everyone must admit, the team sure looks way better now, then it did at the end of the 2011 season.
There are always going to be those fans that say, I will believe it when I see it. And of course there are the fans that still think the Reds should magically increase their payroll so then they can sign better players, then magically release some players that are not doing well. (I love listening to some of these fans sometimes, it is quite funny.) I, like many other Reds fans, was excited about the 2012 season when Walt Jocketty pulled the trigger and made the first trade for Mat Latos this offseason. That move showed me that this year was not going to be like the others. So, here is a list of all the players that the Reds have traded for, signed or invited to spring training this year.
Players traded to Cincinnati Reds.
From Team Mat Latos SDP Sean Marshall CHC Wilson Valdez PHI
Players signed to Cincinnati Reds.
From Team Corky Miller CIN Chad Reineke CIN Sean Gallagher PIT Luis Atilano WSN Kanekoa Texeira NYY Brian Esposito HOU Andrew Brackman NYY Clay Zavada ARI Ryan Madson PHI Willie Harris NYM
Players invited to Cincinnati Reds Spring Training with Minor League contracts.
Jeff Francis Tucker Barnhart Tim Gustafson Sean Gallagher Ron Mahay Rafael Vera Nick Christiani Kenekoa Tazeira Josh Judy John Holdzkom Jean Duque Donnie Joseph Daryl Jones Daniel Corcino Corky Miller Clayton Tanner Clay Zavada Chad Reineke Brian Esposito Andrew Brackman Ryne Reynoso Joel Guzman
Not sure if this list has everyone that has been invited but it is pretty close so far. Let me know if I am missing anyone.
Dioner Navarro signed with Cincinnati Reds and has been invited to spring training. This move adds more depth to catching for the Reds and should not be seen as a problem for starting catchers Ryan Hanigan, Devin Mesoraco and other catcher invites Corky Miller, Brian Esposito and Tucker Barnhart. It really gives more options to the Reds at that very important position and should help the team out during spring training. [Source - Mark Sheldon] and [Source - Tom Groeschen]
In 2011 Navarro had some interesting at-bat results for Los Angeles Dodgers. 21.57% groundout, 18.14% flyout, 17.16% strikeout, 10.78% single and 7.84% walk with 2.45% home runs. He had a lot of troubles with Sliders and Curveballs which both were 70.6% strikes with over 55% swung at and 10 to 14% whiffs. In 202 plate appearances for the Dodgers, Navarro had a .193 BA, .276 OBP and a .324 SLG with 35 strike outs and 20 walks. [at-bat stats - pitch f/x]
It is time to have some fun and put faces to the names we have been reading about. Cincinnati Reds have a few new faces (and some old) coming to spring training in 2012. For more information about these players, please feel free to click on their pictures. All pictures used are from MiLB.com. If you have seen any of these players play before please leave a comment telling us about them. As most of you already know I am a big Corky Miller fan and I can’t wait to see him at Spring Training.

After a fun and exciting day yesterday with the trade of Travis Wood, Dave Sappelt and Ronald Torreyes from the Reds for Sean Marshall from Chicago Cubs and the Reds selecting Josh Judy off waivers from Cleveland Indians I have just found out that we might have missed a deal. I am reading that the “Cincinnati Reds signed [catcher] Brian Esposito as a free agent.”
Esposito was drafted in the 5th round of the 2000 amateur draft by Boston Red Sox and has been on six MLB teams, only two of which he actually played in the big leagues. St. Louis Cardinals for one game and Houston Astros for two. (3 AB, 0 hits, 1 SO) He is a minor league catcher who has played 12 seasons. (234 games in AAA and 238 games in AA) He is not much of a hitter (.216 BA in 12 seasons in minors) but his fielding is not to bad with 87 PB, 534 SB, 195 CS, 27% CS% in 655 games. This would mean they would have Corky Miller (35 years old) and Brian Esposito (32 years old) ready to come up if there are any injuries to Reds catchers Ryan Hanigan or Devin Mesoraco. I think having two veteran catchers like this in the farm system is a good move by the Reds.
This move has not been confirmed by Cincinnati Reds on mlb.com but it could be a move to help with the loss of catching prospect Yasmani Grandal to San Diego Padres in the Mat Latos trade. If this is a move that they did make it shows that they are very comfortable with playing Hanigan and Mesoraco in 2012. And it also shows that all of those arm-chair General Managers still wishing for Mesoraco in a trade to their team this offseason will have to wait even longer.
