New Cincinnati Reds players for 2012

I had fun last night chatting with a friend of mine who does not follow the Cincinnati Reds. She kept asking me what the big deal was this offseason. Of course to many that do not follow Reds news like I do, they don’t know about all of the moves that the Reds and General Manager Walt Jocketty have made this offseason. To Reds fans though, (especially those going to see the 2012 Reds Caravan right now) know exactly what transactions have been made and are very excited about the team and although not all of us see the Reds winning National League Central, everyone must admit, the team sure looks way better now, then it did at the end of the 2011 season.

There are always going to be those fans that say, I will believe it when I see it. And of course there are the fans that still think the Reds should magically increase their payroll so then they can sign better players, then magically release some players that are not doing well. (I love listening to some of these fans sometimes, it is quite funny.) I, like many other Reds fans, was excited about the 2012 season when Walt Jocketty pulled the trigger and made the first trade for Mat Latos this offseason. That move showed me that this year was not going to be like the others. So, here is a list of all the players that the Reds have traded for, signed or invited to spring training this year.

Do you know these players?

It is time to have some fun and put faces to the names we have been reading about. Cincinnati Reds have a few new faces (and some old) coming to spring training in 2012. For more information about these players, please feel free to click on their pictures. All pictures used are from MiLB.com. If you have seen any of these players play before please leave a comment telling us about them. As most of you already know I am a big Corky Miller fan and I can’t wait to see him at Spring Training.

2011 Reds pitching SIERA

Today, I wanted to discuss Cincinnati Reds SIERA (Skill-Interactive ERA) numbers for 2011, using the pitchers on the roster now. “The league-average for starting pitchers is a 3.81 SIERA; the league-average for relievers is a 3.40 SIERA.” Zack Greinke had a 2.66 SIERA followed by Cliff Lee 2.72 SIERA and Roy Halladay 2.79 SIERA. Jonathan Papelbon had a 1.58 SIERA in 2011. I got all of the SIERA stats from my updated Reds pitchers list on fangraphs.com.

Cincinnati Reds pitchers SIERA 2011

Name SIERA
Cueto 3.93
Latos 3.48
Arroyo 4.57
Bailey 3.78
Leake 3.76
Chapman 3.65

Madson 2.63
Marshall 2.20
Masset 3.58
Ondrusek 4.27
Bray 3.45
LeCure 3.01
Arredondo 4.12
Fisher 4.32
Judy 4.62
Brackman 8.69

Of course when trying to determine how good a pitcher really is, it is best to use many different stats in order to better judge each pitcher. SIERA is just one way to judge a pitcher and how well he has done. For more information about SIERA please go and read all the great posts on fangraphs.com

Reds need another Scott Sullivan

I was having some fun today looking at stats of workhorse relief pitchers. To my surprise, I came across a Cincinnati Reds pitcher I remember seeing pitch but never knew he was that hard of a worker, Scott Sullivan.

Scott Sullivan was drafted by Cincinnati Reds in the 2nd round of the 1993 amateur draft. His big league debut was on Saturday, May 6, 1995, at Riverfront Stadium against New York Mets. He faced 7 batters, threw 20 pitches and allowed two hits, one walk and one run. The Reds went on to win that game 13 – 11.

Sullivan pitched for the Reds from 1995 to 2003. In 494 games he pitched in 662.2 innings for the Reds getting a 37-24 record with a 3.91 ERA. Scott went 4 seasons in a row (1998 – 2001) with 100+ innings pitched. 3 of those seasons he pitched in 79 games, (1999 to 2001) In 1998 he played in only 67.

His 10 season career IS% was 31% with 354 IR and 109 IS with 111 holds. He had a 0.59 GB/FB and a 2.8 HR%.

With writing this I came to wonder if some of the pitchers the Reds have just got on the team could fit this role. Could Andrew Brackman turn out to be the next Scott Sullivan? Or how about Josh Judy? Only time will tell and I really hope that these young pitchers the Reds picked up this offseason will turn out to be the next group of “Nasty Boys” for Cincinnati.

Here is a great write-up about Scott Sullivan. If you have time I hope you will go and look at his stats at baseball-reference.com. They are very impressive and I am proud he was a Reds pitcher.

2r2d Podcast: Episode 1 (01.03.12)

I wanted to try out a podcast to start off 2012. I am not sure if I will do a lot of podcasts but if feedback is good it might become a welcome addition to the blog. This first episode is about what I have posted on 2r2d blog. Mat Latos, Sean Marshall and Josh Judy are talked about in this episode.
