Potential to become the best!
As I look back and wonder what made me fall in love with Cincinnati Reds close to 20 years ago, one thing always comes to mind; They have always been the underdog, the little guy. And of course as far as big market / small market teams, the Reds are and have always been in that small market group but they have always had the potential of making a big market team lose a lot of sleep at night. With the addition of Mat Latos, Sean Marshall and Ryan Madson fans are ready for a World Series win and the fans are not the only ones excited about their chances in 2012. Players and the front office are starting to see what it is like when you give fans something to look forward to. Sure, Walt had to really work hard to get these missing pieces in order to give the fans more hope for 2012 but I think he did a great job with what he had.
Now it is up to the players and the coaching staff to step up and show us what they got. They need Scott Rolen to be healthy. They need Bronson Arroyo to be a leader in the starting rotation and show the younger guys how to pitch deep into innings and get 200+ a season. The Reds need Nick Masset, Sean Marshall and Ryan Madson to step up and become the new generation’s Nasty Boys. (The Ma-sty Boys) And most of all, the Reds need promising players like Drew Stubbs, Homer Bailey and Aroldis Chapman to show us they are ready to become great! To be honest, adding guys like Mat Latos, Sean Marshall and Ryan Madson will boost Bailey and Chapman and show them what it takes to become the best in baseball.
Sure, the Reds are still not the favorite to win the National League Central. Tell, me something I don’t know. When have they ever been the favorite in everyone’s eyes? That is what I like about them, they have the potential and only a select few can see it. That is what will make them winning this season even more powerful for those that have been with them for so many years. The history of Cincinnati Reds alone is something to cheer for but I think 2012 is going to be a record-breaking season and a time for Reds fans to get ready for a whole new breed of Big Red Machine / Nasty Boys.
You can go to any other baseball blog out there and get the realistic views and comments of who is “expected” to win, or you can shy away from that thinking and look deep into the roster of the Reds and see what I see, the right combination of players that will win another championship for one of the most exciting ball clubs to ever be in the National League, the Cincinnati Reds!

Major League Baseball most active team in 2012 offseason #reds
In the past few days there have been more moves by Cincinnati Reds and it is hard to believe Walt Jocketty when he says he is finally done. It feels like the man has done more transactions this offseason then he has in the last five seasons combined. First, they made a trade with Philadelphia Phillies for 2B/SS Wilson Valdez for LHP Jeremy Horst. They signed Nick Masset to a two-year contract to avoid arbitration and they signed LHP Jeff Francis to a minor league deal to add more pitching depth. They also signed RHP Ryne Reynoso, INF Joel Guzman and before that, they signed utility player Willie Harris and are still waiting for the official signing of OF Ryan Ludwick. Let us not forget signing Ryan Madson and trading for Sean Marshall and Mat Latos and other minor league and spring training invites to players that will help bring competition to some of the younger guys. This offseason has to go down as the most exciting one I have ever experienced as a Reds fan. (Close to 20 years) No matter the outcome right now I have to say Walt Jocketty has really done a great job on finding players that will help the team win in 2012. With a tight budget he had to be very clever in who he traded for and signed but after all the smoke clears I think he got the best players for what he had available. With upgrades in the starting rotation, bullpen and as closer along with a solid bench upgrade the team is looking great for spring training which is just around the corner.
Another hot topic in the past few days was the Top 100 Prospects of 2012 on mlb.com where Catcher Devin Mesoraco was No. 14 and shortstop Billy Hamilton rated at No. 34.

2011 Reds pitching SIERA
Today, I wanted to discuss Cincinnati Reds SIERA (Skill-Interactive ERA) numbers for 2011, using the pitchers on the roster now. “The league-average for starting pitchers is a 3.81 SIERA; the league-average for relievers is a 3.40 SIERA.” Zack Greinke had a 2.66 SIERA followed by Cliff Lee 2.72 SIERA and Roy Halladay 2.79 SIERA. Jonathan Papelbon had a 1.58 SIERA in 2011. I got all of the SIERA stats from my updated Reds pitchers list on fangraphs.com.

Madson vs. Cordero and the start of The Ma-sty Boys
Ryan Madson has signed a 1 year deal with Cincinnati Reds and I have to be the first to admit I really did not see this coming. I thought Madson would be way out of the Reds price range but once again I was very wrong. Thank you, Walt Jocketty!
– Update: Mark Sheldon just posted on Mark My Word: “More Madson” with questions asking what fans think about the rotation and bullpen now. He also asks who people think the National League Central team is now and my answer has always been the same, The Reds!!!
I wanted to do a comparison of Francisco Cordero and Ryan Madson in 2011 just to help see what the Reds are getting for one year. I posted other information about Madson in “Ryan Madson and Cincinnati Reds” and “Reds, Madson in agreement“
I want to also say that at first (when I thought Madson was way to expensive for the Reds) I only did a little research on him and thought that he might not be the right fit in Great American Ball Park. After looking more into his stats I see that he is one heck of a relief pitcher in any ball park so he should do pretty good. I saw a tweet last night where people were calling Ryan Madson, Sean Marshall and Nick Masset of the Reds “The Ma-sty Boys” and I just had to put it in here. [Tweet]
At-bat results for Ryan Madson in 2011: 25.57% strikeout, 18.32% single, 17.94% groundout, 11.45% flyout, 3.05% walk and 0.76% home run.
At-bat results for Francisco Cordero in 2011: 25.18% groundout, 16.06% flyout, 15.33% strikeout, 11.68% single, 8.03% walk and 2.19% home run.
It is always nice to have options

That makes 9 players out of 38 on the 40-man roster. Jose Arredondo, Homer Bailey, Carlos Fisher and Juan Francisco are the ones that concern me the most. Will they be able to step up their game and play to their potential the whole season? And stay healthy at the same time. I am looking forward to watching Juan Francisco play in 2012 and I really hope these three pitchers can stay off the DL and play great for the Reds.
Another question that comes to mind right now is; will these three pitchers be included in another trade before spring training? The Reds are still looking for an outfielder and a SS/INF and most people think they will look at free agents for that help. I still think Walt Jocketty will make another trade and these three pitchers might be a part of it. There have been some rumors about Homer Bailey being traded already but only by fans, I am not sure if reporters have asked Walt Jocketty if he would trade away these three pitchers this offseason.
Carlos Zambrano vs. Cincinnati Reds
There are rumors going around that Chicago Cubs are trading Carlos Zambrano to Miami Marlins. I thought I would add my two cents. I am glad he is leaving the National League Central, this is another move not done by the Reds that really helps the team.
Carlos Zambrano has a 17-11 record and a 3.28 career ERA vs. the Reds and a 9-3, 3.31 ERA at Great American Ball Park.
