Major League Baseball most active team in 2012 offseason #reds
In the past few days there have been more moves by Cincinnati Reds and it is hard to believe Walt Jocketty when he says he is finally done. It feels like the man has done more transactions this offseason then he has in the last five seasons combined. First, they made a trade with Philadelphia Phillies for 2B/SS Wilson Valdez for LHP Jeremy Horst. They signed Nick Masset to a two-year contract to avoid arbitration and they signed LHP Jeff Francis to a minor league deal to add more pitching depth. They also signed RHP Ryne Reynoso, INF Joel Guzman and before that, they signed utility player Willie Harris and are still waiting for the official signing of OF Ryan Ludwick. Let us not forget signing Ryan Madson and trading for Sean Marshall and Mat Latos and other minor league and spring training invites to players that will help bring competition to some of the younger guys. This offseason has to go down as the most exciting one I have ever experienced as a Reds fan. (Close to 20 years) No matter the outcome right now I have to say Walt Jocketty has really done a great job on finding players that will help the team win in 2012. With a tight budget he had to be very clever in who he traded for and signed but after all the smoke clears I think he got the best players for what he had available. With upgrades in the starting rotation, bullpen and as closer along with a solid bench upgrade the team is looking great for spring training which is just around the corner.
Another hot topic in the past few days was the Top 100 Prospects of 2012 on mlb.com where Catcher Devin Mesoraco was No. 14 and shortstop Billy Hamilton rated at No. 34.
Can Ryan Madson break the Reds single season save record?
With everyone still waiting on the official news of Cincinnati Reds signing closer Ryan Madson I thought maybe we should discuss saves and how many Madson will have to get in order to make his mark in just one season. Jeff Brantley holds the Reds single season save record with 44 saves in 1996. Ryan Madson got 32 saves last season for Philadelphia Phillies.
Jeff Brantley had 49 save opportunities and blew 5 saves in 1996 to walk out with a 90% SV%. Ryan Madson had 34 save opportunities and blew 2 saves in 2011 to get a 94% SV%. Francisco Cordero had 43 save opportunities and blew 6 saves in 2011 (86% SV%) and in 2010 he had 48 SVOpp with 8 BSv with a 83% SV%.
Will Ryan Madson break the single season save record in 2012? It is hard to say but it sure would be a great year if he came close. Francisco Cordero came close to beating the record while he was with the Reds with 40 saves in 2010. Jeff Shaw had 42 in 1997 and Danny Graves had 41 in 2004. Danny Graves of course has the most saves in Reds history with 182 and Cordero gets second with 150. With Madson only signing a one year contract I am sure he will not be around long enough to challenge that record but the single season record is all his if he can get the opportunities.
Great offseason for Cincinnati Reds
Kerry Wood might be leaving Chicago Cubs to sign with Philadelphia Phillies. If this happens it will go down as another move this offseason that will help the Cincinnati Reds in 2012 which they did not have to make. [Source]
Kerry Wood has a career 14-6 record against the Reds with a 2.85 ERA. With 201 strike outs while only giving up 59 walks in 161.1 IP and 47 games. He has a 4-3 record at Great American Ball Park and a 4.05 ERA with 66 strike outs and 17 walks along with only allowing 7 home runs in 53.1 innings pitched. (17 games)
If Kerry Wood does leave the Cubs this will be another move that has pushed the Reds closer to first place in the National League Central without them making any other moves. The Reds did get Sean Marshall and Mat Latos in trades earlier this offseason and are waiting to find out if they will re-sign closer Francisco Cordero but other than that they have not had to really do much more.
This has been one very interesting offseason for Reds fans. First we saw Albert Pujols along with manager Tony LaRussa leave St. Louis Cardinals. Prince Fielder is not expected to return to Milwaukee Brewers and Ryan Braun is expected to get a 50 game suspension due to testing positive for PEDs. The Chicago Cubs are cleaning house and are dealing away most of their high salary players like Carlos Zambrano and there are still rumors that Matt Garza might be next. Houston Astros are in a rebuilding year and are getting ready to move to the American League. Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds are the only teams in National League Central that have not been losing lots of their key players this offseason.
If only the front office could see into the future
When I look over this list it makes me wonder what if the Cincinnati Reds front office could have seen into the future. Would they have picked differently? One thing to note is that Joey Votto was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 2nd round of the 2002 amateur draft.

Will it happen again?
In 1971 Cincinnati Reds had 79 wins and 83 losses. The very same record they finished with in 2011.
In 1970 they finished with 102 wins with 60 losses. Losing 4 games to 1 in the World Series against Baltimore Orioles. (108-54) As we all know in 2010 the Reds had 91 wins and 71 losses not making it to the World Series but they still made the playoffs losing 3 games and getting swept by Philadelphia Phillies. (97-65)
In 1972 the Reds got 95 wins and 59 losses and returned to the World Series to lose again 4 games to 3 against Oakland Athletics. (93-62)
If history is so kind to repeat itself, this means the Reds should do very well in 2012 and make the playoffs again. Maybe even make it to the World Series.
From what the Reds have done this offseason it does not look to promising but there is still time and you never know what Walt Jocketty has planned until he makes the deal.
Albert Pujols and Pete Rose
With lots of people feeling many different kinds of emotions because of Albert Pujols signing with Los Angeles Angels I thought of another player that left a team after being there for many years, Pete Rose.
Pete Edward Rose Sr. signed with Cincinnati Reds as an amateur free agent in 1960. He debuted on Monday, April 8, 1963, at Crosley Field against Pittsburgh Pirates. He batted second in the batting order ahead of Vada Pinson and Frank Robinson and went 0 for 3 with one strike out, one walk and one run scored. He played 2B that day. His final game was on Sunday, August 17, 1986, at Riverfront Stadium against San Diego Padres. He pinch hit for Ron Robinson and went 0 for 1 with one strike out.
At 22 years old I am sure Pete Rose never imagined he would go on to play in Major League Baseball for 24 seasons, 19 of them with Cincinnati Reds.
I don’t know what it was like when he signed as a free agent to the Philadelphia Phillies in 1979 but I am sure Reds fans back then felt pretty much the same way Cardinals fans feel today with Albert Pujols leaving to go to Los Angeles. One thing that might help those fans feel better is; Pete Rose came back to the Reds in 1984 and played a few more years well into his 40s.
So Cardinals fans before you start burning your Albert Pujols jerseys remember that he was a huge part of that ball club for many years and without him your team would not have seen as many great playoff runs and of course even some of the great players that came to play for the Cardinals. Players like Pujols don’t come along every day. Be happy that you got to watch him become the player he is today and that he helped your community for many years. There are many different factors involved into his decision that many of us will never understand. It is not just him wanting more money, (if that was the case he would have clearly signed with Miami.) Another thing that they should be happy about is that he signed with a team in the American League instead of a team in the National League or even worse in their same division.
Pete Rose went on to play until he was 45 years old. Albert is now 31 years old. Many think he will not be able to play until he is 41 but I think with being on an American League team with the DH rule he could do it and then some. Having a player like that last until he was 45 would be unbelievable. Can you imagine his hitting stats at the end? Right now at 31 years old Albert Pujols has 2073 hits after 11 seasons with St. Louis Cardinals. Pete Rose had 4256 hits after 24 seasons. After age 40 he had 5 seasons with 100 or more hits. (172 being the most in 1982) If he can stay healthy there is nothing stopping him from doing what Pete Rose did and I really hope he can play out his 10 year contract with the Angels and maybe even play a few more years after that as a pinch hitter returning to St. Louis Cardinals to finish his career. Many baseball fans think that the Angels made a huge mistake by signing him for a 10 year contract and of course we all know the track record for those lengthy contracts but what if Pujols proves them all wrong. What if he does still hit 38 to 40+ home runs well into his late 30s? In 10 years from now will anyone go on to say how dumb the Cardinals front office was for not signing him sooner before he hit free agency? Or will this 10 year contract be just like the rest? Only time will tell and from where I am standing the Angels walk out of this deal very lucky and I am sure the profits in the first three to four years will gladly pay for the rest of his contract no matter if he plays good or not.
Rule 5 Draft
The Reds got SS Travis Mattair from Philadelphia Phillies [Source] in the Rule 5 Draft. Mattair was drafted by the Phillies in the 2nd round of the 2007 MLB June Amateur Draft.
At 18 years old in 2007 he played for the GCL Phillies in the Gulf Coast League. 54 games, 200 at bats with a .235 BA, .297 OBP. He then went on to play for Lakewood Blue Claws in the South Atlantic League. He played in 129 games, 460 at bats with a .254 BA and .321 OBP. 2009 he returned to Lakewood to play in 126 games and getting a .236 BA in 450 AB. In 2011 he played for Lakewood and Clearwater Threshers of the Florida State League. He ended the season with a total of 90 games played with 312 at bats and a .231 BA. Looking at these numbers don’t do him much justice considering it was mostly single A but there must be something the Reds front office liked about him to get him.
From the looks of it on his minor league stats they had him playing 3B with 394 games and a 4 season total of .941 Fld% with a 2.56 RF / G.
