Moves that helped the Reds
Here is a list of moves so far this offseason that have helped the Cincinnati Reds for the 2012 season. Some of the moves were not even done by the Reds.
- The Reds re-sign catcher Corky Miller.
I think Corky Miller will be a big help in 2012 and see him playing in quite a few games. The Reds were very lucky last season with healthy catchers. I am not sure if that will be the case in 2012. Sure, he is not a great hitter in the big leagues right now but he can call a great game and is a veteran player that can really help out the club when needed. I still see him as being a coach / manager for the Reds one day. I hope to see him and Sam LeCure in Reds jerseys for many more years.
- Albert Pujols signs with Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim leaving the National League Central.
This is a huge move that will help the Reds out big time in 2012. Although the St. Louis Cardinals are still a top team in the National League, they just are not as dangerous to face anymore. They just recently signed Carlos Beltran but I am afraid he might still be very injury prone along with the fact that they have a new manager who might have a tough time keeping the team motivated all season long.
- Ryan Braun tested positive for PEDs.
This suspension will be a big turning point in Milwaukee Brewers season. Along with losing Prince Fielder and the team going back to signing good fielding shortstops instead of good hitting ones this should help the Reds keep ahead of them in the standings all season long.
- Mat Latos traded to the Reds.
There are still a lot of people out there that think the Reds overpaid for this great young starter but only time will tell when it comes to prospects. I think having Mat Latos in the starting rotation will really help the team out in 2012.
- Sean Marshall traded to the Reds from Chicago Cubs.
This trade is still on the table and no one really knows who the two minor league players are. Once the smoke clears though, I see this as being a huge trade for the Reds. Not only did they get a tough relief pitcher away from a division rival but they added an inning eating left-handed setup man, something they were missing last season. The Cubs have been reported to be in a total clean up situation this offseason and might even move more players. Then again, there are also some rumors that they are trying to sign Prince Fielder but I really don’t see this as being a big problem for the Reds. Prince Fielder is a deadly hitter but not as deadly when he doesn’t have Ryan Braun and the rest of the Brewers with him. I am still hoping Prince signs with a team out of the Central but if the Cubs do get him I am not going to lose much sleep over it.
Walt said so
Cincinnati Reds General Manager Walt Jocketty said at the start of the offseason that they would be making more trades than getting free agents and so far he has lived up to his word. At the Winter Meetings this offseason it was very frustrating for the front office and it seemed like other teams were just asking way to much for what the Reds needed. But after Redsfest something happened, something big! Walt and his team started looking into making some moves. Rumors were flying and then all of a sudden Mat Latos was traded from San Diego Padres and now Sean Marshall from Chicago Cubs. Walt said they were dealing with pitching first and he has really done that well this offseason. I don’t think he is done yet. I expect them to make one or two more moves even before Christmas. The ball has started to roll and Walt is getting things done at a record speed now. It is true, they went a little slow out of the gate but now they are moving very well and the team is looking a lot better for 2012.
Keep going Walt, keep going.
First time in GABP
Here is Mat Latos pitching against the Reds in 2009.
“07.29.09: Mat Latos limits the Reds to one run in seven innings, striking out four.”
Here is the video of three rookie pitchers getting the one-hitter against the Reds that day.

Mat Latos vs. National League Central
Mat Latos has not played a lot in Great American Ball Park. In his career he has only played in this hitter friendly park twice, once in 2011 and the other time in 2009. He has only given up 1 home run in 14 innings and recorded 9 strike outs. After watching a few videos of Latos pitch in 2011 for San Diego Padres I have to say I am very impressed by the kid and what he can do. His curveball is amazing and his other pitches set it up very nicely. One very big bonus to this trade is that he is a National League pitcher so there will not have to be any adjustments made through that. Although he will be playing in some hitter friendly parks more now instead of the nice pitcher parks he might be used to, I have read that he did just as good on the road as he did at home. I can’t wait to see what he can do in GABP in the future.

I have included stats of Mat Latos career against National League Central teams so then we can see what teams he has done well against. The Brewers and Cardinals gave him some rough times in his career so far so hopefully with the Reds this will turn around and he will be able to pitch well against them.

Here are the stats of Mat Latos career in National League Central ball parks. I am hoping Bronson Arroyo and the other Reds pitchers will help Latos out with how to pitch well in these parks in 2012, especially in Busch Stadium and Miller Park or Dusty Baker will just have to be very careful of when he plays him when they play in those parks. In 58.4 innings (10 GS) he gave up 6 home runs in these parks while getting 54 strike outs.

Big trade
I have to take my words back and say I am sorry to Walt Jocketty right now. I really did not think he would pull the trigger and make a deal for a starting pitcher this offseason.
Today the Reds traded Edinson Volquez and three of the club’s top prospects, Yonder Alonso, Brad Boxberger and Yasmani Grandal to San Diego Padres for right-handed Mat Latos. This trade gives the Reds their top of the rotation starter they were looking for and it gives San Diego a bunch of top prospects in the game today. At first, I really thought the Reds overpaid but now that I look more into it, I see that there really was no other way Walt Jocketty was going to get the starter they really needed.
The question that comes up now is, who will play in left field in 2012? Yonder Alonso was prepping all offseason for the chance to play in left field and now the Reds have only Chris Heisey and Dave Sappelt. This move also puts the Reds 40 man roster down to 37 players. After looking at the Cincinnati Reds Depth Chart I see that they have their starting rotation set as;
1. J. Cueto 2. M. Latos 3. B. Arroyo 4. H. Bailey 5. M. Leake 6. A. Chapman
Does this mean the Reds will go shopping now for a closer and other position players through free agency? Or do they have more trading up their sleeves? I guess once again we just have to wait and see what happens. I am very happy to see that they did something at least this offseason and this move will help the club. Some people already think they gave up way to much but with deals like this, you never really know what will happen.
Mat Latos trade
Cincinnati Reds traded Edinson Volquez and prospects Yonder Alonso, Brad Boxberger and Yasmani Grandal to San Diego Padres for right-handed Mat Latos. It is nice to see Walt Jocketty made a deal but after seeing the prospects he had to give up I really hope it was worth it. Mat Latos is a great starter but time will only tell if he is worth as much as they gave up. I really hope the three prospects don’t come back to kill the team now since the Padres are in the National League.
